"Merit badges are awards earned by scouts of Scouting America for completing specific requirements in various subjects. These badges allow scouts to explore interests in areas such as science, trades, sports, and life skills, potentially sparking future career paths.
As of 2026, there are 140 distinct merit badges available.
To earn one, a scout must work with a registered counselor, complete the task-based requirements, and submit a signed "blue card" to their troop. For advancement to the Eagle Scout rank, scouts must earn a total of 21 merit badges, including 13 specific required badges and 8 optional ones."
